In Styria - and in all other provinces of Austria - a separate phone number for alpine emergencies has been established. Dialing this number (toll free) directs you to the corresponding LWZ (Landeswarnzentrale). An advantage in dialing this number in comparison with the other possible emergency numbers could be: The LWZ, after reviewing the situation, takes care for helicopter, search and rescue dogs and at the same time for the local mountain rescue team, if necessary. This can save time. If you call for example the air emergency instead (144, helicopter) the helicopter may be able to lift off, but not to landing, because of weather conditions.
